Description
Note the device body in this video is a pretty early version, the newer bodies look much better. But the fundementals of how the device is used, the modules etc. have not changed at all since this video was made.
Basically, it's an Abacus designed to survive the rigors of LARP games, combat sports, etc. It can be used to keep track of skills, magic, uses, etc. in the game where necessary, and can also double as a prop such as a bardic instrument or the like. I originally designed this item for playing Bard in Amtgard, but maybe people who play using other systems can also use it. The main feature is that unlike a normal abacus, the beads will not change positions regardless of how the device is moved or oriented, or with the movement, vibration, and action/combat that is expected in normal play.
This is a modular system where four different sizes of modules can be swapped into the body and the number of beads within a module can be easily changed (see the video). While the tolerances are relatively tight, I could easily print these modules and bodies on a Prusa Mk3s, a Bambu Lab A1, and Bambu Lab X1 and P1s, all with a 0.4mm nozzle. I've only printed it using various PLA filaments, which is great for the application.
The foam used is 1/8" thick foam insulation tape, typically comes in a 2" wide roll that contains 32+ feet of it for around $10. or so. Can be found at home depot, lowe's, or on Amazon if you search for “adhesive foam pipe insulation”.
