Summary

This is a suncatcher or ornament kind of thing. It can stand or hang, it's best with light behind it, and it's more for looking than handling.
To make it you'll need a decent 3D print of this STL file. By decent I mean the part has grooves 1mm wide by 2mm deep, facing all directions, and they have to be completely clear without any powder or cruft. I got mine at Shapeways, it's $24 here. No markup.

Cut transparent inserts

            <div><p>You'll also need need 12 shaped pieces of translucent sheet that's less than 1mm thick and moderately stiff.  Reasonably heavy acetate should work.  Cardstock would work, though to my mind transparency is the whole point of the thing.<br>I used dichroic window film that I got at <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.decorativefilm.com/dichroic-color-shifting-prismatic-textured-films">decorativefilm.com</a>.  I used Glitter but any should work.  I stuck it to itself back to back, so it's double-thick and double-bright, and this also gets rid of the problem that it comes on a roll and doesn't want to be flat.  It's weird stuff.  It reflects yellow and transmits teal or magenta depending on the angle, so it's really trichroic...I have no idea what physics is going on here, but it's pretty.<br>I cut it using a Silhouette Cameo, and I've included a .studio3 file for that.  You'll have to figure out cut depth for your material.  (I used an autoblade set to 8, since as noted my film was super thick.)  There's also a DXF file in case you have some other kind of cutter, and a PDF for if you just have scissors.</p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Assemble it</strong></p>            <div><p>If you want to hang it as a suncatcher, tie a thread to the hanging hole <em>before</em> putting in the panes.<br>Slide your sheet pieces into the slots of each face. The slots need to be completely clear, if there's powder you'll need to dig it out with a toothpick or something.  The last pane is fiddly because it's easier to do this while you can touch the sheet from both sides.  But you'll get it.<br>Then hang it up, wait for sunlight, and be happy.</p></div>
