Description

The Cosmostrator rocket from "The First Spaceship on Venus" .

There are two versions, one that is true to the proportions of the movie rocket, and a second (Venus 2) that I have stretched and divided into components to make a flyable model rocket.

Printed in white Hatchbox PLA, and painted with Rustoleum Silver Metallic paint.

The Venus 2 is printed in CC3D Silky Silver. I do not recommend the Silky Silver for flyable rockets because the interlayer adhesion is weak compared to other PLA's, even when printed at higher temperatures.

Prints with custom cylindrical supports included in the stl. About 230mm tall at 100% Z-scale.

Main fuselage is hollow 1.0mm wall.

The rest of the model is solid. If you print with single perimeter of .5 - .6mm, and zero infill the model will be somewhat fragile and you may get some gaps. Two perimeters, or a single perimeter of 1.0+ mm is better. I recommend using a brim of 3.0 mm or more to make sure the separate, small fin perimeters remain secure until they join together at higher layers.

Use whatever retraction length and speed gives good quality on your printer. I use 2mm at 30mm/s on the Artemis.

Set "minimum travel after retraction" to 5 mm or more to prevent retractions while printing the perforated layers on the support cylinders. Otherwise the retractions there will starve the print head of material and cause under-extrusion on one of the fins until the flow normalizes. If you scale the model to 200%, set it to 10 mm.

The "wipe" setting in your slicer might help a lot on this model since it has a lot of travel moves that require retraction.

Update 1/17/2019: Added files for components of stretched version that has features of a flyable model rocket. Removable tip for adding weight. Room for an 18mm motor tube with BT-55 centering ring at top and BT-50 centering ring at bottom. I have no idea where the CP is on this rocket, so launch it at your own risk. If someone wants to model this rocket in one of the simulator/analysis programs, I will support you with whatever information I can provide. The twist-lock bayonet fittings on this rocket have four locking bumps compared to the single bump used on my previous rockets, so it takes more force to lock them in place.

Update 1/24/2019: Added Upper-Solid and Tail-Solid for those who want more flexibility in scaling and wall thickness. You lose the bayonet fittings, so you will need to design your own couplers etc. the Lower-Solid was requested by Nerys so the lower fuselage could be printed in vase mode and custom fins made separately.

Update 7/11/2019: Added 2 photos of Venus2 printed in CC3D Silky Silver PLA
