Description

Tank-Wagon for 1-Gauge (1/32 45mm tracks).

Updates:

2019-03-21: Spray-mask for DAPOLIN-version added.
Pictures of wagons with two-part support frame for the boiler added.

Prototype:

The model represents a typical Prussian tank-wagon made around 1905. Such wagons
were in use until the 1960s in several European contries. Some still exist at
museum-railways.

The model is designed using the drawing from VAN DER ZYPEN & CHARLIER published
in “MINERALÖLKESSELWAGEN” (mineral oil tank cars) by Stefan Carstens
(MIBA-Report 1/2015) page 6f. Fortunately these pages are contained in the
preview of the book which can be found here:

https://shop.vgbahn.info/media/pdf/Blick%20in%20diese%20Ausgabe/15087247.pdf

The model:

The model can be built in different versions. The files include parts for
versions with a brakeman’s cab or with just a brakeman’s platform. The support
of the tank can be also be made in two different versions: As one part or with
two separate frames.

Printing:

The model can be also printed on smaller printers. The largest parts match a
heatbed from 210*210mms.

The model shown is printed in regular PLA. If you want to use the model outside
in the summer, it could be a good idea to print the parts in a more heat
resistant material.

Frame:

The frame can be printed diagonal flat on a heatbed of 210x210 mms when the raft
or the brim is minimized to 1mm. It should be printed in its normal orientation.

Brakeman’s Cab and Brakeman’s Platform:

These parts should be printed laying with the handrail facing up. This makes it
easier to remove the support.

Tank:

The tanks should be printed standing with the infill upwards. This reduces the
risk to damage the knob at the infill while removing the support.

It could be a good idea to add some ballast in the tank before gluing the front
and rear covers.

Tank-Support:

There are two versions for the tank-support. A single part and two separate
parts. The two separate parts are slightly different due to the different
diameters of the segments of the tank.

Buffers:

The buffers can be printed without support with the heads standing on the
heatbed.

Couplers:

The model can be used with normal Märklin-Couplers. There is an adaptor to use
the wagon with the claw from this coupler:

Assembling:

Wheelsets:

The model can be used with ~30mm wheelsets from the industry or with the
printable wheels contained in the files. For these wheels an additional 3mm
metal-shaft is needed (60 +/-1 mm ). The tolerance depends on the final position of the axle-holders.
The DAPOLIN version shown in the pictures is finished with printed wheel-sets.

Tank:

It could be a good idea to add some ballast in the tank before gluing the front
and rear covers.

It is important to assemble the tank in the right order, otherwise the tank will
not fit exactly to the chassis:

  1. Complete the tank with the ladders.

  2. Put the frame (or the two frames) which supports the tank to the tank. The
cut-outs in the frame should match the rivets.

  3. Mount the outlet tube.

  4. Mount all the parts together to the frame. The ladder should match the holes
    in the frame.
