Description

Before downloading anything, please read the instructions, the list of files is long.
These are the models of the ring megastructures of the videogames saga Halo. The models were made involving different techniques and I spent several days modeling; so if you make any of these models I would really appreciate any kind of contribution, like tiping or at least posting the makes here. I have not test all parts of every model so any feedback would be useful to me, I will try to correct any failture as fast as I could. Many parts may not be manifold, which means that you would have to repair them before printing; this is because there are so many parts that I couldn't check eveyone. Don't worry, many slicers have the capability of repairing non-manifold .stl, or you could use Meshlab, or Microsoft 3D builder to repair them instead. If so, please contact me and I will try to repack with the repaired parts.
The file's names explained: name_1_x_10_y.stl is 1 : x * 10y. So _1_6_10_7 is 1:600000000 or one in 60 million. If two rings are the same model, like Installation 04 and Installation 05, the numbers are stacked like this: installation_04_05_1_x_10_y.stl .
The structures were made mainly with SolidWorks, I used as references many artworks and images from the games. The topography of the installations was made using MATLAB R2016a with topographic maps made arbitrary by me, mixing several other maps, but not following any distibution from the games. Since the rings are flat, the topography may result too thin to be easily discernible, I recommend to paint the continents. Each ring has its own topography:
  • Installation 01 has a Martian terrain, desert like, lightly cratered, I cut a rectangle of the global topography of Mars.
  • Installation 02 has a water-ice terrain, I used parts of Charon topography.
  • Installation 03 has a Venus like relief.
  • Installation 04 is the classic Halo, its surface is Earth like. It is the same model for the Installation 05 and 07
  • Installation 06 has a Lunar landscape, I used the topography of Mercury instead.
  • Installation 08 is an under construction halo. The under-construction parts were made with Solidworks, the rest is Venusian terrain, so these parts are the same as Installation 03.
  • Installation 00 the gigantic star like structure, named also The Ark or Lesser Ark; it's the responsible of creating the other halos. Its topography is a mix of several parts of Earth combined with some of Charon
  • Strip Mining Moon, a planet sized object, called "moon" despite not being orbiting any planet, nor even a star. The topography of this planet was made "randomly" from scratch.

Assembly

Every model in this post is big and they must be made in various parts. The interface between parts is simply flat, and the only method recommended for join them is gluing with cyanoacrylate based cements or your favourite gluing method. There are various scales available for printing the models, and because of the large amount of files I decided to pack all of any scale in .rar packs. Every ring structure has its topography repeated every quarter, so you have to print four times every part to make the complete ring. Here is a guide on how to assemble each scale:

One in four million scale models

This is the biggest scale, the rings are 2.5 m diameter. The Installation 00 is too big for this scale. In this scale the rings can be compared with big asteroids and small moons. You can download the package of files in this scale here. The parts are numbered from 1 to 8, which makes a total of 32 parts:

One in ten million scale models

In this scale the rings are 1 m diameter. The Installation 00 is not available in this scale. In this scale the rings can be compared with medium sized moons. You can download the package of files in this scale here. The parts are numbered from 1 to 4, which makes a total of 16 parts:

One in twenty million scale models

In this scale the rings are 50 cm diameter. The Installation 00 is not available in this scale. In this scale the rings can be compared with big moons like Earth's one. You can download the package of files in this scale here. The parts are numbered from 1 to 2, which makes a total of 8 parts:

Installation 08

The installation 08 has about a quarter of its circumference "unfinished". For any of the previous scales, the Installation 08 parts must be complemented with the Installation 03 parts, in the way it is shown in the image:

One in sixty million scale models

In this scale the rings are 17 cm diameter and they have not relief on their surface. This is because of the narrowness of the model, just 5mm. On the other hand, the rings in this scale can be made in one piece. The Installation 00 and the Mining Moon must be made in pieces; the first is 2 meters wide, but 3mm thick in some parts, so an smaller scale is not possible. In this scale the installations can be compared with rocky planets like Earth, Mars, Mercury or Venus. I had the intention of making the model of the Installation 00 and the Mining Moon scaled down to one in 120 million (the model a half of its size of this one), which would result in a smaller faster printable model, but I resigned this idea because the thinnest parts would be too thin in this scale to be safely printed. However, if you want to try this 1:120M scale you just need to scale every part to 50% or 0.5. You can download the package of files in this scale here. The Installation 00 is splited into 32 parts:
