Description
This is a work in progress of a 100' 35mm development reel. I made a smaller version that worked great (approx 60') so this is a scaled up version of it. the slot size etc is the same, just more spirals to get just over 100'. I do not currently own a printer that can print this, so you will have to experiment on your own. detect thin walls and some other settings are going to be important in your slicing program. Unfortunately I did not write down my final settings that worked. If I subsequently figure them out here I will update.
I made a modification to the core that should make it easier to spool this onto the reel to start, but at the moment it is untested. I also am aware that the struts that radiate out may be too widely spaced as it gets to the outer diameter. If someone reports back that that is the case, I will adjust the design.
perhaps a bit later I will work on the design of the spindle to acommodate 16mm as well. Should be easy, I just need to do a few measurements of 16mm and existing design to make a mod or two. But due to circumstances that might be a few weeks.
CHANGELOG:
6/6/2020: made modifications to keep overall diameter under 255mm so it will fit in a standard 5 gallon bucket. I made the wall 0.1mm less thick overall while keeping the groove same size as before, as that worked well in practical tests. This , however needs to be tested to confirm I have not created a development issue of holding the film too close to itself. I think I am probably OK though as it went from 1.3mm to 1.2mm. I made the top lid 2mm thicker and made the spindle collar 2mm taller to match. I put a very small lip on the outer lip of lid frame, to aid in keeping last bit of film on. I made an additional adjustment to the the notch at the inside on the main dev to make sure starting film is not too hard. Measured inside of the spiral to the notch for the central core is 99.93 feet.
6/6/2020 II: made further modifications to the pitch of the spiral (an additional 0.1mm) so now 1.5mm instead of 1.7mm while keeping 0.4mm slot. Now it should hold 106.4' of film. I am wary of going any shallower, so that will have to do for now. later I will work on a 16mm version of the spindle, and perhaps after feedback from people who can print larger than 255mm X 255mm I can make further modifications. I also loaded an alt lid frame with more support.
6/10/2020: an error in the main dev1 fixed. again, still not proven through actual printing by me in this size and iteration, so there may be some further minor issues.
7/8/2020 I noticed a slight error in CAD file of the spindle, and cleaned it up a bit. new file is 35spindle. I also did a prelim design of 16mm spindle (16spindle) mainly I just subtracted 19mm from it. I have not printed or tested that yet. I plan to make a smaller dev and lid frame that can fit on a Prusa so it can be printed by more people, but that will likely only hold 70 or so feet.
