Description

When creating a grid on the Shaper Origin handheld CNC machine, the company advises temporarily replacing the router bit with an engraving bit mounted upside down in the Shaper's router. It functions as a steel rod to touch off the edges of the workpiece. After locating the new grid on your workpiece, you reinstall the bit you want to cut with and Z-touch before proceeding. This is tedious.

This Shaper Origin Grid Locator replaces the Shaper's router for this operation, holding a .25" steel rod in the right place for locating the grid against the edges of the workpiece. Just unplug, loosen, and slide the router out, insert the Locator, tighten the collar, and create your grid. Then reverse. No unmounting/remounting of router bits or need to Z-touch again. It's much faster, especially if you replace the Shaper's clamping screw with a ratcheting M5-15 lever knob such as these from McMaster-Carr (https://www.mcmaster.com/products/ratchet-handles/adjustable-handles~/adjustable-handles-6/system-of-measurement~metric/thread-size~m5/stud-length~15-mm/).

This design fits the Shaper Origin 1, and probably the 2 (current version) as well since both hold the same Festool router motor. I printed it with PLA using 40% infill and no support.

After you print the holder, purchase a piece of 0.25" steel rod, cut it to 5.625" long, polish any burrs off the end, and press it into the hole in the Locator.

I've supplied both Fusion 360 and .3mf files for this build, along with some pictures. IF YOU USE THE FUSION FILE, turn it over (holes facing up) before slicing. That way no support is needed. I've already oriented the .3mf file correctly.

I've been using this design for a couple months now and it saves time, so I'm glad I made it.
