Richelieu Pivot-Out Compost Bin

I had a stainless compost bin that was mounted in one of my cabinets. It is just a smaller version of the garbage bin I have under the sink. After some time the plastic flip up lid broke and I was unable to locate any replacement parts for it. My choice was to spend another $85 for a new one or try a repair.

The problem with the lid hinge design is that it relies on small plastic projections off the back of the lid that act as the pivot for the hinge. After repeated openings those small plastic pieces can't handle the stresses and finally break off.
My first attempt was to 3D print some small pieces that I glued into the corner and then using acrylic UV glue strengthened the parts. These new hinges worked for several months before they finally broke as well.

This time I decided to design and print a part that uses M3 bolts or a M3 rod to act as the hinge and fasten the part to the upper side of the lid so that it would have enough strength to handle the stresses. My first model was designed to fit my setup which is using the right side of the cabinet. I only designed a single hinge and it worked fine.

In order for it to be useful to others (who may have mounted theirs on the other side) I redesigned the part to handle both left and right installs.

4 M3x8mm bolts
2 M3x30mm bolts

The first step is to carefully clip off any of the existing hinge parts and make sure the faces are clean and smooth. The printed part can then be attached to the top of the lid by placing it in its proper position, marking the top holes on the lid and drilling the 4 holes. M3 bolts can then be used to screw the part onto the lid. M3 30mm bolts can be screwed into the hinge end holes to form the pivot rods. Do not over tighten or you will snap the plastic. Hand tighten with care only.
I screwed the bolts directly into the plastic and did not use nuts. You can always use longer bolts and nuts if it works better for you.

Note: Make sure the part fits your lid before making alterations. This part was designed to fit the size of bin I have. There may be many different sizes available.
The approx size of the bin is about 26 cm outer diameter by about 29 cm tall.
