Description

This is a more robust boat clamp than the boat mount extension I had previously posted (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5553712). It uses a "universal" C-clamp that is often used for audio/visual equipment and an extendable mop handle. I designed a bracket to attach to the C-clamp and mop handle and a rotating fixture that attaches to a latching feature on the mop handle and the Deeper Sonar fish finder. I designed this several years ago, but did not want to post the design until I had an opportunity to test it.

The deeper_bracket and bracket_arm parts are from the bait boat design posted by stouf78113.

The mop handle I used is a commercial Rubbermaid HYGEN model with a quick-connect feature. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002X9MMZC?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1

The C-clamp I used does not appear to be available any longer, but I was able to find similar models on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018RLY6B2/ref=sspa_dk_detail_5?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B018RLY6B2&pd_rd_w=e1fwG&content-id=amzn1.sym.8c2f9165-8e93-42a1-8313-73d3809141a2&pf_rd_p=8c2f9165-8e93-42a1-8313-73d3809141a2&pf_rd_r=CS7M2D2FWZG4EP20Y5EH&pd_rd_wg=5acjf&pd_rd_r=db0538fb-1930-4697-ba16-55c8e78cbd1a&s=photo&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWw

Other hardware required includes:

  • Three 1/4 inch hex head bolts, 1/2 inch long
  • Three 1/4 inch hex head bolts, at least 1 inch long (I would recommend 1-1/4 inch, but I used 1 inch)
  • Three 1/4 inch hex nuts
  • Four M4x20 mm socket head bolts
  • Four M4 hex nuts
  • One M4x12 mm socket head bolt
  • Two M5x16 mm socket head bolts

The Rotating_Bracket fits over the pole_clip and is held in place by the cap using the M4x12 mm bolt. You need to print two of the bracket_arm parts that are attached to the Rotating_Bracket and the deeper_bracket. The pole_clip snaps onto the quick-connect feature of the HYGEN mop handle. I removed the rubber protective pieces from the C-clamp to increase the opening. The Clamp_Bracket attaches to the C-clamp using three 1/4 inch x 1/2 inch hex head bolts. A late addition to the design is a holder for the M5 bolts used to attach to the fish finder. This is installed in the gap under the 1/4 inch bolts and the excess protruding holds it in place. The M5 bolts friction fit into the holes and are used to attach the fish finder to the deeper_bracket. [I provided four spots for the M5 bolts, even though only two are needed since if I only had two I would probably drop one of the bolts in the water.] The pole_ pieces sandwich the Clamp_Bracket and the mop pole. The two bolts on one side are fixed. The single bolt on the other side uses a bolt slipped into the handle piece and can be loosened to allow the bracket to slide on the pole.

This design worked well on the pontoon boat that I rented for fishing. I recommend using the attachment ring on the top position (as shown in the photos) and tying a line between the ring and the boat, just in case. I also recommend removing the mount when moving at high speeds. The minimum spacing between the C-clamp and the bracket is about 10 inches, the maximum is about 36 inches.
