Update - 06-06-2026:

Uploaded  new profile that has a printed screw as opposed to having to use a steel screw. You need to use the 2nd profile in the list if you prefer this option.

I was looking for a cheap line spooler that I could use anywhere and not have to rely on a suction pad and smooth surface. I came across this online and thought, “I can make that”. And here's the result. It fits any size rod from 7mm diameter to 20mm diameter. I used M10 Stainless steel threaded rod and an old 12mm dia spring I had lying around. 3/8" rod and a suitable dia spring will also work fine. Just make sure the spring has sufficient tension to be effective.

I've left the holes slightly undersized so they can be drilled out to final size. I did this to cater for tolerance variences in various printers. The large hole on the threaded handle needs to be threaded with an M10 or 3/8"  tap. I still haven't mastered printing accurate threads unfortunately. I epoxied the knob to the threaded rod.

The centre pin is countersunk on one end to fit snug into the handle chamfer around the hole. Once it's pushed through both holes, I cut off the excess, heated up a piece of steel and melted it flush into the chamfer around the hole on the opposite side
