Summary

Update Apr 17, 2024

  • Added a lanyard version for those who want to tether the box to something like their kayak. Like I do!
  • Reoriented all models to sit in print orientation

This is a set of boxes intended for use as leader-line holders. I built if for spools ~100mm in diameter. Tested with Cortland line, Strike King, and Berkley. I needed a 3-line box for kayak fishing and thought it would be fun to design and print. I was right! It was easy to make versions from 2-7, but the three-spools version is what I've printed for use. I have included a 2-spool version with tabs for mounting to aid in putting line on fishing reels.

There are four primary components for each box:

  1. Box Bottom - this is the partitioned box-half with no holes
  2. Box Top - the is the partitioned box-half with holes
  3. Box Latch - this is borrowed from Whity's Rugged Box - thank you!
  4. Line Grommet - meant to provide some friction or a fasten point so line doesn't just slide back in

In addition to the printed parts, you will need Four M4x25mm bolts

If you use this and love it, please post a make! If you want to help keep me in fishing gear, that's appreciated too.

Printing Instructions

I printed everything with a 0.6mm nozzle. I think the grommet would come out better with 0.4mm nozzle, but I was too lazy to change. I sliced it with Cura.

Box Bottom & Top

  • Bottom/top on the surface of the bed
  • PLA+ (Overture PLA Professional for me)
  • 0.38mm layer height (0.44mm first layer)
  • 3 walls (1.8mm @ 0.6mm nozzle)
  • 10% lightning infill - walls are strong enough alone
  • No supports
  • Adhesion: None or skirt
  • I can fit both top and bottom on my Ender 3 pro bed up to the 5-spool version. After that they need to print separately.

Box Latch

  • Oriented on it's side
  • PLA+ (Overture PLA Professional for me)
  • 3 walls
  • 60% grid infill
  • No supports
  • Adhesion: Raft - elephant foot will harm the fit.

Grommet

  • Oriented on edge
  • TPU (Overture again, but not because I prefer it, but because that's what I had)
  • 3 walls
  • 60% grid infill
  • Normal supports, touching bed
  • Adhesion: Raft - elephant foot just looks bad on this.
