Elevated player dashboard for Twilight Imperium

You know, I know: Twilight Imperium is a massive table hog. I play Twilight Imperium on a ~ 90cm x 220 cm (~6-7ft table) and always struggled find solutions to organize players components. Now that I have a 3D printer I figured it was time to try something a bit over the top that could be both functional and offer a great table presence to enhance the gameplay experience. I have seen people creating custom tables dedicated to Twilight Imperium, but I didn't want to go that far. So my middle ground is this player dashboard.

✨Features

• 3 card holder slots along the long side of the main player mat, plus additional card holders distributed across the dashboard for extra card storage
• Frames keep the faction mat, the leader mat and the command board mat in place and offer additional card storage if needed
• Compatible with my Strategy Card holders: you can attach a strategy card using that holder on either side of the dashboard (making it also compatible with 4 player games)
• The speaker token can be attached at the front or at one of the sides instead of a strategy card (compatible with my Speaker Token holder or custom made metal speaker token holder, etc.)
• The underside has space to hold my Player Units tray, my Faction Box, the player's hand and there's space even for their mobile phone!
• The front can be used to place upright the player's scored objectives, and face-up promissory notes, such as "Support for the throne" or “Alliance” with the ability to put a control token in place just above each card.
• The front has additional upright card storage if needed
• Many decorative elements to make the dashboard not just functional but also look very cool!

📜 Read before you print

This is a large model and each dashboard will consume about 750g of filament and take several hours to print, so before you commit I highly recommend you examine the model, perhaps even reach out to me if you have questions, and print a test (or parts of it) to give you an idea if it's the right fit for you.

🙋FAQ

Q: The dashboard looks too tall! Will the player see the game board?

 

A: Yes! It looks tall but it's just the right height so the player can pull components from the underside. I played with these dashboard using a regular map without any gimmicks or accessories to elevate that and it was just fine. 

 

Q: The dashboard has an incline: will the components slide?

 

A: If you use unsleeved cards or special custom made components like metal coins they might slide. To prevent sliding, cut some acrylic sheets to fit the 3 board frames and sandwich them in between the player mats and the frames. Most acrylic materials will create a static grip preventing the components from sliding and will also protect your mats. I highly recommend this solution.

 

Q: Does it have any magnetic components?

 

A: No but you could probably make the frames for the faction sheet, the command sheet and the leaders sheet magnetic by inserting magnets mid print. I haven't tried that personally as it wasn't necessary but it would be cool to try.

🏗️ Print & assembly instructions

No supports required! No glue required! 

 

You need to print at least 6 of the 4 plates included in the main profile, or 8 for 8 player games.

 

The dashboards can be disassembled for storage and reassembled quickly with simple connectors. To assemble:

1. Connect the two front pieces by sliding the sides together
2. Slide the two big halves into the front pieces using the dovetail rails
3. Insert first the leader board and then the command board along the guides, making sure they're snugly fit all the way down and flat
4. Repeat with the faction board

To disassemble: remove first the smaller boards, then the faction board, and slide out the big pieces. I was able to keep everything in storage in a drawer and half inside an IKEA Besta furniture with half drawers.

 

Note that this is a rather large model and I used a H2S printer to print it: smaller printers will likely require to split the model in half and glue the halves afterwards. I would not recommend it with this model in particular but feel free to try!
